Risk Severity Calculation

Learn how Risk Severity is calculated automatically based on the selected Impact and Probability values.

What Is Severity?

Severity is a rating that is automatically calculated for each Risk based on two factors: Impact and Probability. You do not enter Severity manually. The system determines it for you.

How Is It Calculated?

The system uses a risk matrix to combine the selected Impact and Probability values into a single Severity rating.

The calculation is based on the Order (sort position) of the selected Impact and Probability picklist items, not their display labels. This means the numeric order of your picklist options determines the result.

Severity Matrix by Pick list Order

Impact Order \ Probability Order 0 1 2 3
0 0 (Very High) 0 (Very High) 1 (High) 2 (Medium)
1 0 (Very High) 1 (High) 1 (High) 2 (Medium)
2 1 (High) 1 (High) 2 (Medium) 3 (Low)
3 2 (Medium) 2 (Medium) 3 (Low) 3 (Low)

Important!

The Severity result depends on the Order values configured for your Impact and Probability picklist items under the Risk category.

If those Order values are changed, the Severity calculation will produce different results.

What Do I Need to Do?

To calculate Severity, simply set the Impact and Probability values on the Risk.

Once both values are selected, the Severity field updates automatically.

What If Impact or Probability Has Not Been Set?

If either Impact or Probability has not been set, Severity will appear as None.

This means there is not enough information yet to calculate the risk rating.

Where Will I See It?

Severity is displayed as a read-only field in the following places:

  • Risk register views
  • Risk detail pop-ups
  • Excel exports

Because Severity is calculated automatically, it always reflects the current Impact and Probability values selected on the Risk.
